Directorial debut of producer Hsu Li-kong (behind the films of Tsai Ming-liang, amidst many), “Fleeing by Night” is an embarrassing failure at almost every steady. Mainland-shot, Taiwan-produced period melodrama squanders a good cast, including actress Rene Liu, in a dramatically hell for leather fibre about a young woman destroyed by her husband’s passion for a spear opera performer.
Looking like she’s receiving no direction at all, Liu plays Wei Ying’er, daughter of a Tianjin theater owner, whose cellist fiance, Hsu Shaodong (Huang Lei), is smitten by moody Peking Opera star Lin Chung (Yin Chao-te). Lin, however, has another rival for his affections in rich kid Huang Zilei (Tai Li-jen). As the story drags itself from turbulent ’30s China to New York in the ’40s, Ying’er finally surrenders her own love in the face of stronger homosexual passions. An hour in, pic makes its gay undercurrents explicit in a sack scene that’s bold by Chinese standards, but script and performances are all over the place, with Chris Babida’s churning score trying to paper over the cracks. Co-director Yin Chi previously made the much more inflected modern meller “In a Strange City” (1996).
